Drive Safely in the Fog!

Thursday December 18, 2008
All day, Austin has been coated in an unusually thick layer of fog, with visibility in feet in certain areas (and many accidents as a result). This morning, weather forecasters predicted the dense fog would dissipate by mid-day today, but it stubbornly remained. It's now expected to disappear at some point on Friday, but the morning commuters will still face the fog.

How can you drive more safely in this intense and unusual Austin weather? The Florida Highway Patrol recommends driving slowly, as painful as it is, and to be patient. They also remind drivers to use their low beam lights, as high beam lights are actually difficult to see through fog. You should also reduce your distractions by not talking on your cell phone, and signal far in advance if you're changing lanes. Do NOT stop in the middle of a highway if you can't see; move to the side of the road. If visibility is very poor, use the right edge of the road or painted stripes on the road as your guide. Drive safely!
