Some people live for it - others opt to stay at home. Mark your calendar for Tax Free Weekend. It's August 20-22, 2010 and it's going to be huge in the state of Texas.
No Kids, No Worries
This holiday was originally marketed as an incentive for back-to-school shopping. However, it's not just for kids. Treat yourself to some new stilettos or flip flops as long as the price tag is under $100. And you can stock up your office with those fancy Dr. Grip pens that everyone steals from your desk.
Tax-Free Items
Most basic clothing items under $100 are tax free. Stock up on jeans, Texas Longhorn t-shirts, tennis shoes, jackets, swim suits and unmentionables. Personally, I will be stocking up on diapers. They're tax-free too.
Taxed Items
Sorry athletes -- you still have to pay taxes on cleated shoes, helmets, football pants and pads. Fashionistas must pay taxes on hair accessories, purses and jewelry.
School Supplies
You do not have to pay taxes on paste, number 2 pencils, crayons. Stock up on printer paper, folders, scotch tape and other supplies for your at-home office too.
A complete list of tax-free items is available.
Be on the lookout
Furniture stores have been known to jump on the tax-free bandwagon by offering a discount equivalent to the sales-tax rate to help entice customers into that new sleeper sofa. Lots of restaurants and bars offer specials under the tax-free theory.
Shop Early
I bet you can't find a parking space at places like the Round Rock Premium Outlets so be sure to start out early on your shopping adventure.
Happy shopping!
