How To Reduce Ozone Emissions in Your Home in Austin

From Jacci Howard Bear, for About.com

In Central Texas, ozone action season runs from April through October. Ground-level ozone in Northwest Travis County violates Federal standards and mandatory compliance measures could become necessary if we don't act. Help yourself and your neighbors breathe easier by reducing the amount of ozone produced at your home.
Difficulty: Average
Time Required: Ongoing, as long as it takes to reduce ozone emissions and clean the air

Here's How:

  1. Avoid Fossel Fuels.
Stop burning fossil fuels which contribute to pollution and ozone formation.

  2. Wash Dishes and Clothes Less Often.
Limit the use of your dishwasher and washing machine. Use low water levels for washing.

  3. Avoid Lighter Fluids.
Don't use charcoal lighter fluids. The fumes contribute to air pollution.

  4. Practice Air-Friendly Lawncare.
Use electric or manual (push) lawn mowers, edgers, and other yard care equipment or mow less often to limit ozone-producing emissions from gas-powered equipment.

  5. Choose Composting Over Burning.
Compost yard waste. Burning produces air pollution.

  6. Choose Latex Paints.
Use latex paints in your home. Oil-based paints produce ozone-forming fumes.

  7. Paint with Rollers and Brushes.
Avoid gasoline-powered paint sprayers that cause fumes that contribute to ozone. Use rollers and brushes to paint your home.

  8. Store Gas Securely.
If you store gas cans at your home, make sure the caps fit snugly in order to stop ozone-producing fumes from escaping.

Tips:

  1. Save Your Money.
Many of the ozone emission reduction measures are also money-saving moves. It's a win-win situation for you and the City.

  2. Save Your Health.
Ozone emission reduction measures are breath-saving moves too. High ozone levels can make breathing difficult and is especially bad for young children and for adults with other respiratory problems.

What You Need:

  • Electric or manual push lawn mower
  • Compost
  • Latex paints
  • Gas containers with well-fitting caps
