As reported in the Austin American-Statesman Metro & State section, The City of Austin has earmarked $750,000 of federal grant money for small businesses. The key recipients are women and minority-owned small businesses. Several groups will share in the money, each with their own approach and mission, including:

Inc. placed Austin at #5 in its 50 Best Small Metro Areas to Start and Grow a Company list for 2000. Other Texas cities on the list were: El Paso (21), Corpus Christi (40), and Brownsville-McAllen (44). On the list of large metro areas were Dallas-Fort Worth (6), Houston-Galveston (17), and San Antonio (22).
