Barsana Dham

From Jacci Howard Bear, for About.com

Barsana Dham is a center for worship and traditional Indian cultural activities. The most striking aspect for casual visitors to the facility is the Temple of Shree Raseshwari Radha Rani and its surrounding grounds. His Divinity Swami Prakashanand Saraswati, founder of the International Society of Divine Love, established Barsana Dham in 1990. The 35,000 square foot Temple, dedicated in 1995, is one of the largest and most beautiful Hindu temples in the United States.

Barsana Dham - An Unusual Sight in the Hill Country:

Driving along FM 1826 most of what you'll see are rolling hills, barbed wire fences, and a few scattered subdivisions to let you know that civilization isn't too far away. But even when you're looking for Barsana Dham, the sight of the shining dome peeking over the treetops is an awesome and unexpected treat.

This already beautiful portion of the hill country has been lovingly transformed into a representation of the holy land of Braj in India. The various ponds and hills and even the natural stream represent real places in Braj.

Visiting the Barsana Dham Temple:

Sightseeing visitors are welcome at Barsana Dham during general visiting hours of 8:30am-10am and 3pm-5pm. It is also open for worship to anyone who believes in God with Holy Vision of the Deity Daily and Temple Services on Sundays.

For general visitation, sign in before touring the grounds. You'll need to remove your shoes first - place them on the shelves outside the front of the temple before entering. The prayer hall is quite beautiful but you cannot take photos inside the building.Remember, this is a place of worship so be quiet and respectful at all times. Children are welcome but don't let them climb on the furniture or run wild inside or outside. Just inside the front door is a table with fliers and a self-guided tour brochure which may be useful to you.

Please observe these rules of conduct: • No photography inside the Temple • Cars must remain on paved roads • No smoking on the property • No alcohol on the property • No non-vegetarian food on the property • No pets • Children must be accompanied by parents at all times
