May Activities and Events in Austin

From Jacci Howard Bear and Lyla Jewel Bear, for About.com

In the merry month of May we have activities with names from history such as O.Henry and Old Pecan Street.

Marathons & 5Ks:

Austin's May running events include a race down Congress Avenue and a trail run along Walnut Creek.

Frank Erwin Center:

Events at the Frank Erwin Center in May include the music of Kenny Chesney and football with the Austin Wranglers.

Cinco de Mayo:

The Battle of Puebla which took place May 5, 1862 is commemorated annually as Cinco de Mayo with celebrations on and around that day.

Old Pecan Street Spring Arts Festival:

6th Street, formerly Old Pecan Street, is the site for this annual arts & crafts fair. The 2008 dates are May 3-4.

O. Henry Pun-Off:

Known as the lowest form of wit, the pun takes centerstage at the annual O. Henry Pun-Off. Punsters from around the country compete for "Punniest of Show."

Memorial Day Weekend:

From a concert and sing-along at the Capitol to Shakespeare in the Park, find events and things to do on Memorial Day weekend in Austin.

What to Wear in May:

Don't forget the umbrella. Although the little rhyme about April showers is a little off because May is generally the wettest month of the year in Austin. Temperatures are on the rise but March and April still have their share of cool days so bring along a light jacket or sweater. The last of freezing temperatures (which are rare themselves) generally occur in early March.
