Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez was born in San Antonio in 1968, where he grew up making countless home movies. Rodriguez attended film school at the University of Texas at Austin, where he made the award-winning short film "Bedhead" (still shown today by proud UT professors). After school he became well-known for shooting low-budget and small-crew films, producing his first career film, "El Mariachi," for around $7,000. Rodriguez has even written a book about his untraditional film style called "Rebel Without a Crew." He is a true Renaissance man. He has co-directed "Sin City," wrote and directed "Planet Terror" (part of the double feature "Grindhouse" with Quentin Tarantino, whom he frequently collaborates with). He wrote, produced, edited, and directed the popular "Spy Kids" trilogy and has composed music for the "Sin City" movies, "Kill Bill 2," and many other films. Rodriguez's film studio, Troublemaker Studios, is located in Austin and he is very active in the Austin film community.
