There are many caves and caverns found in Central Texas. Caves are hollow or natural underground passages, usually with an opening to the surface. Caverns are larger caves or caves with many rooms and openings. Around Austin there are several caverns open to the public with guided tours, such as Inner Space Caverns in Georgetown. Other caves are less easily located and generally only explored by professional or amateur spelunkers or may require special permission to enter. A sampling of some of the caves and caverns of interest in Central Texas are:

Show Caves
These caves and caverns are equipped with trails, many handicapped-accessible, and electric lights. Except for a comfortable walking shoes, no special equipment is required for most standard cave tours.

  • Cascade Caverns
    In Kendall County near Boerne and open year-round, the Cascade Caverns are only 1,700 feet long but are 132 feet deep and are the only caverns in Texas to sport a 100 foot waterfall.

  • Cave Without a Name
    In Kendall County, near Boerne, the Cave Without a Name is open for tours year-round.

  • Inner Space Cavern
    This popular Georgetown attraction on Interstate 35 is an impressive 15,000 feet long and 80 feet deep. They offer standard adventure tours of just over an hour as well as wild cavern and extended tours of new trails.

  • Longhorn Cavern
    Located in Burnet County, the cavern was used by Comanche Indians and later by the Confederate Army as a secret manufacturing site for gunpowder. Now a state park, they offer daily and special tours including wild cave tours and geology programs.

  • Natural Bridge Caverns
    A 75-minute tour takes you through one of Texas' most spectacular show caverns located between New Braunfels and San Antonio. Open daily (except some holidays) including extended hours in the summer, in addition to the standard tour there is a flashlight tour, adventure tours, and other special events at the Natural Bridge Caverns.

  • Wonder Cave
    Found at Wonder World Park in Hays County, Wonder Cave is 1,296 feet long and 91 feet deep. While visiting Wonder World Park, explore not only the cave but other attractions including a wild life park and the anti-gravity house.

Wild Caves
Wild caves have no trails or lights (other than the lights you bring in with you). Many show caves offer wild cave tours of some of the areas of the caves not yet fully developed or not open to the general touring public. Wild cave tours often require special equipment, lighting, and crawling through dark, cramped spaces.

  • Airman's Cave
    Popular hangout for hikers along Barton Creek, Airman's cave is a wild cave along the Barton Creek Greenbelt. The cave is 11,000 feet long and 30 feet deep although you'll have to squeeze through the "birth canal" to explore much of the cave.

  • West Cave
    Part of a nature trail in a tree-shaded canyon in Travis County near Bee Caves, West Cave, formerly Hammet's Cave, is 150 feet long and 8 feet deep. One hour wild cave tours are available on the weekends for the first 30 people to show up - no admission fee but donations accepted.
