Outdoor Activities Offer Musical Options in Austin

From , former About.com Guide

Austin is known for its summer live music series, which locals and visitors get to enjoy for free.

Blues on the Green

The longest running free music series in Austin is back for its 21st season in 2011. The music is sponsored by local radio station KGSR and the green in the title refers to Zilker Park (2100 Barton Springs Road). Shows will take over the park at 7:30 p.m. on June 8, June 22, July 6, July 20, Aug. 3 and Aug. 17. Join the thousands of other music fans and feel free to bring blankets, lawn chairs, dogs on leashes and children. If you bring an appetite, food and beverages from six local restaurants will be available. And if you miss the shows, KGSR will stream live video of each performance on its Blues on the Green page. If you want up-to-the-minute information on the series, text "Blues" to 43981 or visit the fan page on Facebook.

Concerts in the Park at the Long Center

It's not always what people think of when they think of the Live Music Capital of the world. But locals and visitors can take in the sounds of the Austin Symphony every Sunday of summer 2011 for a series that's now in its seventh season. Bring blankets and a picnic to Hartman Park (701 W. Riverside Drive) on the grounds of the Long Center for Performing Arts and take in the featured ensembles every week through the end of August. Concert selections range from film scores and pops selections to jazz and light classical. The only exception will be July 3 because the Austin Symphony will be performing its annual July 4 program the following day at Auditorium Shores just across the street.
