If you’re looking for a post-work snack and drink in the same place, J. Black’s happy hour is the place to be. Located in the hip West 6th Street area, which attracts the young professional crowd, the venue has a cozy lounge, social bar area, and a patio with outdoor seating for those who want more of a restaurant vibe. The sophisticated, yet bar-friendly, fare includes Texas Kobe Sliders, New Zealand Lamb Chop Lollipops, Crab & Dill Salad, and Jambalaya Pizza. Happy Hour is every day from 4–8 p.m. and features $1 off all drinks, 25% off bottles of wine and half price on certain foods. The three-cheese focaccia with pesto dipping sauce is delicious.
3. El Arroyo
While the 5th Street location is the most popular, El Arroyo’s second location in the Far West area is convenient for those in North Austin and offers the same specials. This delicious Mexican restaurant is a hotspot for tasty and unusual flavors of margaritas. Try the watermelon or green apple margarita while munching on chips and queso or a cup of tortilla soup. Happy hour is every weekday from 2–7 p.m. and provides discounted margaritas and beer. The restaurant also has daily drink specials, such as $1 Tecates all day Monday and $1 margaritas on Tuesday and Thursday from 2–6 p.m.
This cozy but hip bar sits in the recently popular Warehouse District, which attracts more young professionals than the 6th Street college crowd. The list of beers available is extensive and ever changing, and the bar even offers beer blends (and encourages you to ask for your own concoctions). The bar offers $3 draught beers from Texas on Tuesdays after 5 p.m. and features live music on Wednesdays evenings. There are various specials on other days, such as Service Industry Night on Sundays, where all service employees get happy hour prices all day. The outdoor beer garden is a perfect place to enjoy a breezy evening.
5. 219 West
Located in the Warehouse District, 219 West offers a posh atmosphere, incredible food, great music, and budget-friendly drink specials. Rather than being organized by type of meal, the menu is categorized by the drinks they go best with (beer, martini, Scotch, mint julep, wine, and tequila). Tasty appetizers offered include yellowfin & shrimp ceviche, gulf seafood beignets, chipotle mac and cheese, and mini caprese burgers. 219 West attracts all types of crowds and age groups. Happy hour is from 5-9 p.m. on weekdays, 5-8 p.m. on Saturdays and 6-8 p.m. on Sundays.
6. The Posse East Bar & Grill
If you want to visit a laid-back but lively venue to sip a cold beer, The Posse East is your spot. Located near cozy Hyde Park and just a short walk from the University of Texas football stadium, this friendly bar and eatery has 21 beers on tap and is a favorite spot for locals to converse on the patio, watch Longhorn sports, play a round of darts, and eat old-fashioned nachos. Posse has frequent drink specials.
