You Can't Do That in Austin!

Prohibited Activities: Glass Containers

From Jacci Howard Bear, for About.com

Before you stroll down the street with that icy cold longneck in your hand, you better make sure you're not in one of the six areas of town where you are not allowed to have or transport open glass containers (such as bottles of beer or other beverages).

The restriction on glass containers doesn't apply to baby bottles used by babies (that is, an adult pouring their drink into a baby bottle wouldn't be considered a valid exception), glass-lined thermos bottles, or glass prescription drug containers. Glass containers at sidewalk cafes within the designated areas are allowed, as is, drinking from an open glass container in front of your own home or a residence where you are a guest.

Glass Containers Areas
See Section 9-4-12 of the Austin Code of Ordinances for a detailed description of the six areas covered by this ordinance. In brief they are:

  2. the area roughly bounded by IH35, 13th Street, Airport Blvd. and Holly Street including Chicon, Rosewood Avenue, and Webberville Road.

  3. from the south shore of Town Lake south to Oltorf between Congress Avenue on the east and Lamar Blvd.on the west. This encompasses Auditorium Shores and the area around the Palmer Events Center.

  4. the area from Guadalupe Street (the Drag) to Rio Grande starting at MLK, Jr. Blvd on the south up to 29th Street on the north.
