Does recycling really make a difference?

By Emily Starbuck Gerson, About.com

Question: Does recycling really make a difference?
Answer: Yes! Residents of the Austin area generate enough trash to fill the Frank Erwin Center every four months – that’s a lot of garbage! Here are some recycling facts:<br>
  • Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to power a television for three hours.
  • Manufacturing cans from recycled aluminum produces 96% less water and air pollution than when making them from raw material.
  • If you recycled your newspaper every day for a year, it would provide the pulp equivalent of 2/3 of an acre of commercial forest.
  • Recycling one ton of newspaper saves 17 pine trees. Each day, about 600 pines trees are saved from recycling efforts in Austin.
