Halloween Haunted House Delivers a Frightfully Good Time Over and Over Again

About.com Rating five out of Five

By Jacci Howard Bear, About.com

2007 Reviews: House of Torment and Illusion Manor | 2006 House of Torment For the best scares and most fun, take a trip (or two or three) through the House of Torment. Sarah, Samantha, and I had such a good time on our first visit that we grabbed three more friends (including their scaredy cat older sister) and went back for more the following night. It's a semi-traditional Halloween haunted house theme set apart from others by its great set and creepy ghouls and zombies.

House of Torment - Tormenting You Before You Even Go Inside

On our first visit we were the first group through and there was no waiting. There was a fairly long line the next night but it's not a boring wait. The zombies walk among you - or rather they slip up behind you, slide right under you, or come at you from above. That evening we also received a hand stamp that allows you to go through again the same evening for just $5.

You'll find the House of Torment: In a building behind Highland Mall, across from Foley's

The House of Torment Has Its Ups and Downs

When you enter the the front door of the House of Torment you're in a parlor where a creepy voice informs you of the rules (no running, no touching, etc.). Once the door springs open off you go (if the ghouls will let you) on a tortuously twisted journey down dark, cramped hallways and through a maze of rooms leading you up and down and up and down as you go round and round - it's a multilevel house - no stairs, just ramps.

A Different Experience Each Time You Enter the House of Torment

Although the route is the same each time, you may encounter certain inhabitants at different points in your journey making it hard to anticipate what's coming next. Samantha was delighted whenever Bobo the clown came out to play (yes, Bobo, we know your name). Be prepared (if you can) for loud noises, unexpected movement, and dark narrow hallways where you're never quite sure if that thing brushing across your face is friend or foe.

At times the light is blinding and at others times the darkness forces you to feel your way around - not a good idea when you never know just what you might touch. I don't recommend wearing heels, as I did on my first trip through. Comfortable shoes make it easier to go up and down the inclined floor. Even though we were walking quite rapidly our first time through it was still a good long 20 minute journey -- well worth the $13 admission.
