The Bottom Line

It doesn't have the fancy sets or professional actors of more established haunted attractions, but The Creep Zone still delivers its own sort of skin-crawling, heart-pounding excitement. The creepiness is primarily in the way the creeps appear sometimes out of nowhere, disappear quickly, or persist in following you around.
Pros
  • Large passage ways and rooms -- not claustrophobic.
  • Relies more on creepy people and less on props and special effects.
  • Closest to being wheelchair-accessible of all the area haunts.
  • Less expensive than most of the area attractions.
Cons
  • 1st year and not as polished as some long-running, pro houses.
  • A fairly long drive from Central Austin.

Guide Review - The Creep Zone

Coming from the bright lights of Austin, it's something of a creepy drive out there past the Dell Diamond. Housed in some sort of large industrial building, you wander through fairly wide "hallways" and rooms that contain mildly gruesome scenes.

While some of you more jaded haunted house visitors might not be impressed by The Creep Zone (why do you even go?), for those willing to get into the spirit of the adventure it's a fun little romp through the semi-darkness. Some might dispute the 4 star rating and in some respects it's only a 3 or 3.5 but a lot depends on your mindset and your own particular "scare triggers." When we visited it was late and there were very few people there (beyond staff) which added to the feeling of isolation and made us a little more jumpy.

The props are not particularly special and much of the set is simply 8 foot plywood walls arranged to form a meandering series of roomy hallways and mostly plain rooms that are inhabited by costumed characters who pop (or materialize) out of the shadows, block your path, follow you around (often silently), and just generally give you the creeps. At one point I looked over at my group and counted heads -- there was one extra. And we were followed well past the exit.

There are two attractions within The Creep Zone: Dungeon of Death and Dr. Dyer's Bio-Lab. We felt that Dungeon of Death was the better of the two but for $12.00 (with coupon), why not do both? Oh, and take a look at your friends' faces and your hands while you're standing around in the darkness just before entering the attraction.

If you live in the Round Rock / North Austin area or you're already visiting the Mansion of Terror in Round Rock, you might want to take a little drive into The Creep Zone.
