February 2009 Events Calendar for Austin

February 3: The Killers perform at the Frank Erwin Center with opener M83. Show at 8 p.m.

February 3-8: Legally Blonde, the musical, is performed at Bass Concert Hall. If you loved the movie, you’ll love the Broadway version.

February 5: The Harlem Globetrotters, the basketball team full of tricks, visits the Frank Erwin Center as a part of their “Spinning the Globe” World Tour. The show is at 7 p.m.

February 5: Lecture by playwright, writer, and director David Mamet hosted by the Harry Ransom Center. He will converse with UT president William Powers Jr. about The Spanish Prisoner and there will then be a screening of it. It is at the Texas Union Theatre and admission is free. The event begins at 7 p.m.; doors open at 6:30.

February 6-8: Central Market’s Festival of Chocolate. More details to come.

February 6: Jupiter String Quartet performs at UT’s McCullough Theatre at 8 p.m. Winners of the Cleveland Quartet Award, they will play a set of chamber music followed by a post-performance Q&A.

February 7 Work by visual artist Nicole Eriko Smith will be presented at Domy Books (913 East Cesar Chavez) from 7 – 9 p.m. Admission is free.

February 12-15: Sesame Street Live at the Frank Erwin Center. The performance is called “Elmo’s Green Thumb.” See the website for performance times.

February 13: Pink Floyd Laser Spectacular at Austin Music Hall at 8 p.m. The two-hour show features multi-screen video projection and lasers while playing music from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon” and The Best of Pink Floyd in 3-D.

February 13-14: Circus Oz , a contemporary, comical, and animal-free circus, performs at Bass Concert Hall. With rock ‘n roll music and incredible stunts, this Australian group can’t be missed. Friday show at 8 p.m., Saturday shows at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

February 13-15: A contemporary version of Hamlet is performed by Ballet Austin at The Long Center. It is set to music by Philip Glass. Friday and Saturday shows at are 8 p.m.; Sunday show is at 3 p.m.

February 14: Citizen Cope performs at the outdoors stage at Stubb’s. The doors open at 8 p.m.

February 14Austin Humane Society's 5th Annual Sweetheart Social. Come celebrate Valentine's Day, hear live music, eat snacks and dessert, drink wine, participate in a silent auction, and get a chance to win a new car. All proceeds benefit the shelter. Held at Majestic's Grape Vine Market (7938 Great Northern Blvd.) from noon to 6 p.m. Admission is free.

February 15 The TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls play roller derby at the Austin Convention Center. The teams duking it out are the Cherry Bombs vs. Putas del Fuego. Doors open at 6 p.m. and tickets are $15.

February 15: Austin Marathon and Half-Marathon at 7 a.m. The marathon starts at the corner of Congress and Cesar Chavez, winds throughout Central Austin, and ends at Congress and 9th.

February 18: Garth Fagan Dance performs at The Long Center 8 p.m. The group is directed by Garth Fagan, the Tony Award-winning choreographer of the Broadway musical The Lion King.

February 19: Robin William performs at the Frank Erwin Center as part of his comedy tour, ”Weapons of Self-Destruction,” which is his first tour in six years. The show is at 8 p.m.

February 22: Austin Chamber Music Center performs 7th Annual Black History Month Concert. The performance is free and will be held at the King Seabrook Chapel at Huston-Tillotson University (900 Chicon). Show at 3 p.m.

February 26-March 22: The City Theatre performs Fences as a part of Black History Month with an African-American cast. Shows at 8 p.m. Thursday - Saturday and at 8:00 p.m. on Sundays.

February 27-March 1: Austin Green Living and Home Products Expo at the Austin Convention Center. Learn about renewable energies, green building, organic gardening, organic foods, eco-friendly interiors, and more. Friday: 2-7 p.m., Saturday: 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday: 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

February 28-March 1: Austin Cat Fanciers’ Annual Championship and Household Pet Cat Show at the Palmer Events Center. Show on Saturday 11:30 a.m-7:00 p.m. and Sunday 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

February 28: Bill Cosby at Bass Concert Hall. The comedian will perform his stand-up act at 6:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.

February 28 Sixth Annual Scandinavian Film Festival. Held at the Bob Bullock History museum, films from Scandinavia will be played from 1:30-9:30 p.m. From 9:30 p.m.-midnight, there will be a reception.

February 28: Joie de Vivre Charity Mardi Gras Ball presented by 96.7 KISS FM. Hosted at the Austin Music Hall from 8 p.m. to midnight, this event benefits the El Buen Samaritano’s Children and Youth Programs. Enjoy Mardis Gras for a good cause!
