March 2: University of Texas men’s basketball game. The Longhorns take on Baylor at 8 p.m. at the Frank Erwin Center.
March 3: A free public screening of "Ayn Rand - A Sense of Life" followed by a Q&A session with the film’s associate producer. At the University of Texas Belmont Hall (BEL 328) at 7:30 p.m. Sponsored by the UT Objectivism Society.
March 6: Grupo Corpo, a Brazilian dance company, performs a thrilling mix of ballet and modern dance. Show is 8 p.m. at the Bass Concert Hall.
March 7: Sculpture Challenge. Buy art directly from artists, hear live music, and vote for the best sculpture! The event benefits the PAWS Animal and Humane Shelter. 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. at Carved Stone, Inc. (5300 Bell Springs Rd. in Dripping Springs). Admission is $10.
March 7: It’s My Park Day. Co-presented by the Wheatsville Food Co-op and Austin Parks Foundation, this city-wide volunteer event involves projects at over 50 local parks. The focus is on planting trees. Register for a project at austinparks.org..
March 10-15: Monty Python’s Spamalot. This Tony-winning musical comedy will keep you laughing. Most shows are at 8 p.m., with two matinees.
March 11: Merle Haggard, a major star in the country music singer/songwriter genre, performs at the Austin Music Hall. Doors at 7 p.m.; show at 8 p.m.
March 13-18: Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo. Come experience Western culture with live music, livestock, and exciting events such as cattle roping, barrel racing, and bull and bronco riding. There will also be a carnival with a ferris wheel, games, and cotton candy.
March 13-22: South by Southwest Festival and Conference. This festival has three components: film, music, and interactive. Enjoy live concerts, film screenings, lectures, workshops, trade shows, and much more.
March 16-April 19: "The Heidi Chronicles" at The City Theatre. Enjoy performances of this hit comedy about a woman and her friends coming of age in a tumultuous time. Shows are from Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
March 18: Absolutely Incredible Kid Day with Camp Fire USA. This program for all ages encourages adults to write letters of love and support to the children in their lives (stationary is provided). There will also be a celebration for Camp Fire’s 99th birthday with a museum scavenger hunt, arts and crafts, birthday cakes, and informative booths. At the Austin Children’s Museum from 5-9 p.m.
March 19: Third Thursday: An Evening Devoted to Cool Jazz. This free event is from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Blanton Museum. There is a live jazz performance at 6 p.m., yoga in the galleries at 6:30 p.m., book club at 7 p.m., and an art brief of the “Birth of Cool” exhibit at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
March 25: Montserrat. The popular Spanish singer famous for her bossa nova tunes performs at the University of Texas’ McCullough Theatre at 8 p.m.
March 28: The “World Famous” Lipizzaner Stallions. Come see this rare breed of horse perform choreography and routines in a very family-friendly and musical show. Frank Erwin Center; shows at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $20.50 to $29.50.
