November Events Calendar for Austin

With the coming of the holidays, November in Austin offers numerous activities. Whether you want to watch a holiday parade, play in Celtic Highland games, or sample vegetarian chili, there is an event for you this month.

November 1-2: Austin Celtic Festival. Held annually since 1997, this event celebrates the Celtic culture of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and other countries. Come eat Celtic food, dance to Celtic music, listen to storytellers, and participate in Highland games. Events are at Fiesta Gardens at Lady Bird Lake.

November 5: The Dionysium. Presented by the Salvage Vanguard theatre, this unique monthly event offers lectures, debates, theatrical presentations, and music in what is called a "salon-like" environment. At the November event, there will be a debate about whether the Federal Reserve should exist, a musical performance by cellist Julia Cory, a presentation from a local animator, and the Austin Museum of Art will deliver a powerpoint presentation previewing new exhibitions Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, 7 – 9 p.m.

November 6: Rocker kd lang plays a show at the Paramount Theatre. Doors open at 7 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m.

November 7-9: Settlement Home Garage Sale. This gargantuan annual garage sale is hosted by the Settlement Home for Children, a nonprofit that helps care for troubled children and their families. It costs $5 to enter on Friday, but the other days are free. The garage sale is divided into large sections, and you can find works of art, used furniture, clothing, jewelry, holiday decorations, and just about everything else under the sun. The prices are dirt cheap and the cause is hard to beat.

November 9: 20th Annual Lone Star Vegetarian Chili Cook-Off. Held at the Historic Austin Farmer’s Market, this event is open to the public for an $8 admission fee. Come taste vegetarian and vegan chili, listen to guest speakers, and win door prizes. Event is from noon to 4 p.m. at 6701 Burnet Road.

November 11: Matisyahu, a Hasidic Jew who performs music that combines traditional Jewish music, rock, reggaie, and hip hop, plays at Stubb's Bar-B-Q. Doors open at 7 p.m.

November 13 Rock Band Live Tour. Panic at the Disco, Dashboard Confessional, Plain White T’s and The Cab perform at the Frank Erwin Center. The show starts at 7:00 p.m.

November 15 and 16: Austin natives Ghostland Observatory put on two shows at Stubb's Bar-B-Q. Doors at 7 p.m.

November 16: The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Other Eric Carle Favorites. This favorite children's novel and other tales by author Eric Carle will be told in stage form at The Paramount Theatre under a black light. Shows at 2 and 4:30 p.m.

November 16: Public festival at Blanton Museum of Fine Arts.Come celebrate the public opening of the Blanton's Edgar A. Smith building, which completes the Blanton Museum complex and makes it the largest university museum in the nation. There will be art activities, architectural and gallery tours, and film screenings sponsored by the Austin Film Festival. The Guy Forsyth Band will be playing live music on the plaza. Critic and art historian Jed Perl, will be giving a lecture followed by a book signing. The event starts a 1 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m.

November 18:Methodman and Redman perform at Stubb's Bar-B-Q. Doors open at 7 p.m.

November 22 Fight Night.This fight at the Frank Erwin Center features many top-notch boxers, including Texas Super Featherweight Boxing Champion Adauto “Galito” Gonzalez. The boxing ring opens at 7:30 p.m.

November 22: Nada Surf performs at Emo's. Doors open at 9, and the show starts at 10

November 22 and 23: East Austin Studio Tour. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., artists across Eats Austin will open their studios for the seventh annual tour and allow the public to come in and meet them and gain insight into their creative process. With over 100 participating events, this free event is a must for art lovers.

November 27: Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot. This annual event hosted by Thundercloud Subs on Thanksgiving day features a 5k run, a one-mile run, and a kid's K run. All of the proceeds go to Caritas of Austin, which helps impoverished individuals become more self-reliant.Event starts at 9:30 a.m. at Waterloo Park (12th & Trinity).

November 29: Chuy’s Christmas Parade. Mexican restaurant Chuy’s hosts its annual winter parade, with marching bands, enormous balloons, children’s characters, and classic cars, floats. The parade starts at the Capital (Congress and 11th Streets) at 11 a.m. and moves south down Congress Avenue until Cesar Chavez. All attendees are encouraged to bring a new toy for Operation Blue Santa, which helps disadvantaged children enjoy the holidays.
