August 1: The Weird Sisters perform Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) at the Cathedral of Junk (4422 Lareina Drive). Enjoy this irreverent look at a Shakespeare classic. Show starts at 8 p.m.
August 3 Acclaimed roots-rock band Counting Crows perform live at the Austin Music Hall with opener Augustana. Show is at 7:30 p.m.
August 5-8: Festival of Cheese. This annual festival hosted by the American Cheese Society is in Austin this year at the Hilton Austin. There will be more than 1,100 cheeses from more than 30 states and Canada available for sampling. There will be a judging and competition, in addition to a cheese sale.
August 8: 1st Annual Honky Tonk Luau.Enjoy ice cold beer, music by DJ Randy Estrada, horseshoe, snacks, games and a limbo contest, and more. You are encouraged to come dressed in Hawaiian attire. Event is 21+. At the Giddy Up (12010 Manchaca Rd.)
August 12-30 The Grammy and Tony award-winning musical Wicked is performed at the Bass Concert Hall.
August 13: Premios Texas 2009. The 5th annual Latin music awards show will feature live performances and appearances by some of the biggest names in local, national and international Latin Music, including Olga Tañón, Makano, Bobby Pulido, K-Paz de la Sierra, Vallejo and more. Any and all fans of Premios Texas to come watch the stars arrive on the red carpet! The Premios Awards are at The Long Center. The night before will be a free pre-concert at the Long Center terrace from 5-10 p.m.
August 13, 20, and 27: One-Hit Wonders of the 80s Sing-Along at Alamo Drafthouse (the Ritz location). It’s a part of the Alamo’s Sing-Along Extravaganzas Signature Series. Shows on the 13th at 10:40 p.m. Shows on the 20th and 27th start at 9:45 p.m.
August 15: Texas Testosterone Festival. This is an exciting showcase of all things manly, extreme and adrenaline-pumping. The Festival will feature exhibitions of sports, competition, autos and culture for men and active women in two Featured Event areas, an interactive exhibit floor and a cash bar. At the Palmer Events Center; doors open at 10 a.m. both days.

August 19-23 Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® Presents OVER THE TOP. Come enjoy this classic circus act at the Frank Erwin Center with morning, evening, and afternoon shows. Arrive an hour before show time for the All Access Pre-show – FREE to all ticket holders, and meet Ringling Bros. performers, collect autographs, photographs, don authentic circus wardrobe and learn circus skills from the low wire to the trapeze rig.
August 21: Sugar Ray performs live with Austin band Fastball and Aimee Allen at La Zona Rosa. Show begins at 9 p.m.
August 22: Highland Mall Safety Fair. Families can connect with the local agencies and organizations that keep our community and families safe. This free event will feature police vehicles, CPR demonstrations, a jet-ski simulator, and Child ID fingerprinting for children. It will also include exhibits on crime prevention, disaster readiness, rail safety, alcohol and drug awareness, and more. At Highland Mall from 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
August 20-September 13: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. This adaptation of C.S. Lewis' classic is performed at The City Theatre. It is a great show for all ages. Shows Thurs. – Sat. at 8:00 and Sun. 5:30. 3823 Airport Blvd. Suite D. Tickets $15-20, Children ten and under $10, Thursdays all seats $10.
August 28: Comedienne Paula Poundstone performs live at the One World Theatre. Shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. Paula has partnered with the ALTAFF (The Association of Library Trustees Advocates Friends & Foundations) supporters of The Austin Public Library, who will sell Paula’s book and receive 100% of the proceeds, and participate in other fund-raising activities. Paula will be available for a book signing after the show.
