May 2009 Events Calendar for Austin

May 6: Lady Gaga performs at the Austin Music Hall with The Veronicas. It is also the site of the Bobby Bones Show’s 2nd Chance Prom, so prom-wear is encouraged! The show is at 6:30 p.m.

May 9: Austin Cycling Association’s 15th Annual Armadillo Hill Country Classic. Takes cyclists on a tour of the Highland Lake and Hill Country northwest of Austin, Texas. Proceeds provide free helmets for children along with fittings and bicycle safety training. Begins and ends at Liberty Hill High School, and features a selection of route distances ranging from 14 to 105 miles, plus a 6.5-mile Kids & Family Ride in Bertram.

May 9: Brew B-Que. Come enjoy this first annual event with beer sampling, barbeque and live music in downtown Austin’s Waterloo Park. There will be music on two stages from 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Not to be missed is the Lumber Jack Show, which will feature log rolling, chainsaw racing, world champion cross-cut sawing and more. Join in on the barbecue challenge and bring your pup for Chihuahua races.

May 9: Art Ball 2009. Hosted by the Austin Museum of Art to benefit its exhibitions and education program. Enjoy dining, dancing and an art auction. Event from 6-11 p.m. in the grand ballroom of the AT&T Executive Education & Conference Center.

May 11-13: Flight of the Conchords, the New Zealand duo who perform comedy and music, performs at The Paramount Theatre. Shows at 7:30 p.m.

May 13: The Recording Conservatory of Austin Unsigned Artist Competition at Stubb’s Bar-B-Q (inside stage). Bands who are interested register online, and fans vote for their favorites. The four finalists will wine the opportunity to play at this showcase in front of major label representatives. Doors at 9 p.m.

May 13: The Video Marketing Expo. Designed to help new media marketers and video production specialists meet the challenges of delivering compelling and entertaining interactive online video. Keynote speakers include experts in broadcasting, online advertising, high-definition video production, and rich media marketing strategies. All day at the Hilton Downtown.

May 14: Blues legend Pinetop Perkins performs at Antone’s with special guests. Doors at 8 p.m., show at 9 p.m.

May 19: The Crystal Method performs at La Zona Rosa with guest La Riots. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m.

May 23: Austin Civic Chorus, a 140-voice chorus, presents concert “For All Mankind,” a collection of inspiring choral masterpieces that celebrate life, patriotism and humanity. At Northwest Hills United Methodist Church (7050 Village Center Drive) at 8 p.m.

May 21: Third Thursday at the Blanton Museum of Art. This free event features a special gallery talk at 6 p.m. byWorkSpace artist Lisi Raskin. At 6:30 p.m. there will be yoga in the galleries. At 7 p.m., the Blanton Book Club will be discussing The Madonnas of Leningrad by Debra Dean. At 7 & 8 p.m. there will be an art brief tour of the exhibit Art & Memory.

May 30: Anthony Bourdain & Mario Batali at The Paramount Theatre. The two foodies, authors, and television stars are both known for thinking and eating outside of the box. They sit down to discuss cooking, restaurants and chefs in front of a live audience. Show at 8 p.m.
