Restaurant Review: Galaxy Cafe

Modern Cafe in Central Austin

About.com Rating 4 Star Rating

With the slew of restaurant options in Austin – including a wide variety of wonderful breakfast spots – it can sometimes be overwhelming to decide where to go. Whenever I’m having a difficult time figuring out where I want to eat, I always fall back on one restaurant: Galaxy Café. This wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinner joint has become an Austin landmark thanks to its delicious, dependable fare. With three locations in Austin, Galaxy Café is accessible to all areas of town, but my favorite is the Clarksville location, 1000 West Lynn, for its ambiance, clientele and wonderful food.

Breakfast Fare

Let’s start with the food. First of all, everything I’ve had on the Galaxy Café menu has been excellent. The breakfast options are particularly memorable. My favorite is the French breakfast, which includes a slice of homemade quiche – spinach and feta or leek and Canadian bacon – fresh fruit and your choice of ciabatta, wheat toast or half a bagel. My husband, on the other hand, adores their signature breakfast wraps, which include three scrambled eggs, a giant tortilla and a side of salsa. Breakfast wrap options include a Migas wrap (eggs, breakfast sausage, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes, tortilla strips); the Lumberjack wrap (eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes and cheese); the Garden wrap (eggs, spinach, roasted red ball peppers, cheese and avocado); and the Uptown (eggs, Canadian bacon, smoked gouda, mushrooms and avocado).

Other delightful breakfast items include a Mexican breakfast of migas, eggs, jalapenos, cheese, tomato and onion; a Meditteranean breakfast of scrambled eggs, fresh tomato, feta and basil with fruit and your choice of ciabatta, wheat toast or a half bagel; a Denver scramble of Canadian bacon, cheese, onion, bell peppers with potatoes and choice of bread; homemade oatmeal; organic vanilla yogurt; Galaxy strawberry muffins; French toast sticks; and a bagel sandwich with eggs, bacon and cheddar cheese, served with chipotle apricot glaze on the side.

Lunch and Dinner

Lunch and dinner menu items are also excellent. Take a look at the variety of burgers: Bleu cheese bacon burger; Italian burger with prosciutto, fresh mozzarella and balsamic roasted tomato; Zocalo burger (hamburger patty seasoned with crushed red pepper, served with jalapenos, grilled onions and melted cheese); the veggie burger deluxe (veggie patty with avocado and sautéed mushrooms); brie burger; mushroom Swiss burger; and a build-your-own burger option. Other popular items include the grilled chicken sandwich with mozzarella and bacon; the brie smoked turkey sandwich; the chicken parmesan sandwich; pesto and mozzarella polenta cakes (dinner only); homemade turkey meatloaf (dinner only); and seared yellowfin tuna steak (dinner only).

Gluten-Free and Children's Options

Also impressive is the full Gluten free menu, which includes items such as grilled chicken, gluten free pasta, grilled skirt steak with chimichurri sauce, roasted tomato and prosciutto grilled chicken, a gluten free grilled fish wrap, gluten free mozzarella sandwich on rice bread, hot shrimp salad with baby spinach and even flourless chocolate torte and crème brulee for dessert. Oh, and if you’re taking the kids, be aware of the many options that include miniature burgers, quesadillas, grilled cheese, mac and cheese, chicken tenders, fish sticks, pasta with red sauce, fresh fruit, oatmeal, organic vanilla yogurt, French toast sticks and the young American, which comes with free range scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage patty and ciabatta or wheat toast.
