Whether you're visiting Austin on vacation or have just become a new resident - or even if you've been here years but want to learn more about our city - there are guided tours of Austin for you. Explore downtown Austin's historical districts, pubs, and music. Visit the Hill Country. See our city by foot, by bus, from the water, or get a grave-side view of Austin history. Some guided tours are free, others require payment and sometimes reservations well in advance. Some tours offer self-guided options as well.

Historic Walking Tours of Downtown Austin

Tour historic parts of town on foot in two free quided walking tours. Available year-round except a few holidays (or during bad weather) take a free guided walk in the Congress Avenue and 6th Street districts. Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau conducts several different downtown area guided walking tours. Some days or tours require reservations.

Walking Tours of the University of Texas

New students, alumni, and history buffs will enjoy a tour of UT. Take a guided tour of the UT Tower. The Office of Admissions schedules walking tours of the campus. You can only get access to the UT Tower Observation Deck via a tour and space is limited so make reservations in advance. The UT Web site also offers several virtual tours of campus sites and history and self-guided tours too.

Texas State Capitol Tours

You can wander the halls of the Capitol building on your own, but if you want more insider information, take a guided tour. Guided Capitol tours are available 7 days a week except for some holidays. Group, non-English, and sign language tours available too. Or, grab one of the available self-guided brochures for the Capitol, the Capitol Grounds, or the historic and significant trees on the Capitol Grounds. Guided tours are about 45 minutes long and if you have a group of 10 or more, you'll need a reservation.

Haunted Texas - Austh Ghost Tours

Walk with the spirits in one of several spooky walking tours that introduce you to the haunted sites and haunting sights of Austin. Find out where the bodies are buried (or not) on 6th Street, at the Capitol, or in the Warehouse District. The 6th Street tour includes the very haunted and very beautiful Driskill Hotel.

GPS Ranger Tours

Available from the Austin Visitors Center, this tour is a cross between a guided tour and a self-guided tour. BarZ Adventures provides the GPS Ranger technology and local personalities and multimedia guide you as you follow maps, audio, and video directions to each destination on the tour.

SegCity Austin

If you've been downtown you may have seen groups of Segway riders. They were probably part of a Segway glided tour. It's a unique way to tour Austin that combines the ease of a bus tour with the upclose and personal experience of a walking tour. After teaching you how to ride a Segway Human Transporter you'll take off on a guided / glided tour of downtown Austin.

Austin Overtures

Hop in a pink (fuchsia) van and get a 90 minute narrated sightseeing tour of Austin points of interest starting from the Austin Visitor Information Center on 6th Street. There are two to four tours available each day. Sights along the way include the Capitol, Texas State Cemetary, UT, Camp Mabry, Mt. Bonnell, Wild Basin Preserve, The Warehouse District, Zilker Park, and much more.

Austin Duck Adventures

Tour Austin on land and in the lake in an authentic amphibious military landing vehicle. Board the DUCK downtown and get a "Duck's-eye-view" of the State Capitol, the Governor's Mansion, the LBJ Museum, and 6th Street while listening to facts about Austin and enjoying some of the music that gives the city its nickname "Live Music Capital of the World." Daily tours (schedule changes with the seasons). Making reservations 1-2 months in advance is recommended.

Lone Star Riverboat

Many groups rent out this authentic paddle wheel riverboat for weddings, birthdays, meetings, or parties. You can also book a tour on Lake Lady Bird (formerly Town Lake) or take one of the scheduled public cruises. Bat watching/sunset tours are available from March through October.

Austin Tour Guide Association

The Austin Tour Guide Association represents around 20 tour guides in Austin, all of whom are certified. Each member is an independent contractor and they are mostly "step-on" guides for buses or conventioneers who rent vans or buses, or hotels. They sometimes do "meet and greet" and help groups and destination management companies. They can be hired by any group that wants a tour. They are trained, professional guides who share Austin, its nightlife, history, culture, etc. with visitors. They also do tours of the wineries, Fredericksburg, the LBJ country, the Highland Lakes, and more. Anne Dilworth gives tours through the Driskill hotel dressed in period costume as Mrs. Driskill. Some of the guides have their own commercial vehicles.
